PRESS BOX: Pitt loses starting QB Browne

University of Pittsburgh quarterback Max Browne underwent season-ending surgery on his throwing shoulder, Panthers coach Pat Narduzzi announced Thursday.

Browne injured his right shoulder during last Saturday's 27-24 loss to Syracuse.

The injury ends the college career of the graduate transfer, who played at USC before joining the Panthers prior to this season.

Sophomore Ben DiNucci will be the new starter, beginning with Saturday's game against North Carolina State.

Pitt is 2-4, including 0-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.


--Cameron Smith of Australia shot a bogey-free, 8-under-par 64 to take a one-shot lead after one round of the CIMB Classic in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Smith started quickly, collecting five birdies on the front nine, and now leads a PGA Tour event after the first round for the first time in 64 starts. He has won one previous PGA Tour title, taking the Zurich Classic in April.

--Sung Hyun Park recorded birdies on her final two holes to pull into a three-way tie for first place at the LPGA KEB Hana Bank Championship at Incheon, South Korea.

The world's second-ranked golfer, Park is tied with fellow South Korean Min-Sun Kim and Australian Minjee Lee after each shot a 6-under-par 66 on an overcast day on the SKY72 Golf Resort's Ocean Course.


--Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer both cruised through their matches to earn spots in the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Rolex Masters in China.

The top-seeded Nadal recorded a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Italy's Fabio Fognini, while the second-seeded Federer registered a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Ukrainian qualifier Alexandr Dolgopolov.

--All three seeded players in action lost at the Hong Kong Tennis Open -- two without even taking the court.

Top-seeded Elina Svitolina and defending champion Caroline Wozniacki each withdrew due to injuries prior to their quarterfinal matches at Victoria Park, Hong Kong.

Also, Jennifer Brady of the United States rolled to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over eighth-seeded Zhang Shuai of China.

--Maria Sharapova cruised into the quarterfinals of the Tianjin Open with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Poland's Madga Linette in Tianjin, China.

Sharapova advances to face Swiss qualifier Stefanie Voegele, who posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over fifth-seeded Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan.

--The top two seeds advanced to the quarterfinals of the Upper Austria Ladies Linz in Linz, Austria.

No. 1 seed Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia posted a straight-sets victory over Carina Witthoeft of Germany, winning a tiebreaker en route to a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory.

Second-seeded Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over qualifier Jana Fett of Croatia.
