MLB notebook: Taillon upbeat in wake of cancer diagnosis

Sports Xchange - Saturday 20th May, 2017

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Jameson Taillon is keeping an optimistic outlook in his recovery following surgery for testicular cancer.

"(I'm) feeling good now, feeling healthy. We're getting all good news back so far," Taillon said on Friday. "Going forward, it'll be something I have to monitor and stay on top of, something I'll carry with me the rest of my life."

Taillon, who said he is taking rehabilitation day by day, discovered the abnormality after being placed on the disabled list on May 6. He had tissue surgically removed two days later at Allegheny General Hospital.

The 25-year-old Taillon, who owns a 2-1 mark with a 3.31 ERA in six starts this season, was cleared to play catch and resume light cardiovascular drills Wednesday. Taillon has a 7-5 career mark with a 3.36 ERA in 24 games since being selected with the second overall pick of the 2010 draft.

--The St. Louis Cardinals activated infielder Jhonny Peralta from the 10-day disabled list prior to their game against the San Francisco Giants.

Rookie outfielder Magneuris Sierra was optioned to Double-A Springfield in a corresponding move.

Peralta, who has been sidelined since April 17 with upper respiratory issues, batted just .120 with three singles in 25 at-bats this season. The 34-year-old fared significantly better in three games with Triple-A Memphis, hitting .364 with a double and two RBIs.

--The Boston Red Sox recalled right-hander Noe Ramirez from Triple-A Pawtucket prior to their game against the Oakland Athletics.

Left-hander Robbie Ross was optioned to Pawtucket in a corresponding move.

Ramirez struck out one batter and did not allow a hit in 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief against the Detroit Tigers on April 8. The 27-year-old has posted an 0-1 mark with two saves and a 2.53 ERA in nine relief appearances this season with Pawtucket.
